eBook sales rocket in the UK

A 'blockbuster' Christmas for e-book sales

Hachette has reported a "blockbuster Christmas for e-books", selling more than 100,000 e-books in the UK on Christmas Day, and "many more" in international markets.

The figure echoes that of HarperCollins, which reported selling more than 100,000 e-books in the UK as well as international territories such as Australia and New Zealand.

Hachette UK group head of digital George Walkley said sales leapt by more than 400% on Christmas Day, compared to Christmas Eve, with sales "remaining very strong" throughout the festive period. He described December overall as a "very good month" for e-books.

Over 100,000 HarperCollins UK e-books were downloaded on Christmas Day, the publisher has announced.

HarperCollins said the figure, which covers UK and international territories including Australia and New Zealand, but not the US, was a record high and an increase of over 600% on the daily average title download during the previous month.

The most popular titles downloaded were George R R Martin's Game of Thrones, Confessions of a GP by Dr Benjamin Daniels and Twelve Days of Christmas by romantic comedy novelist Trisha Ashley. Sanctus by Simon Toyne and Midnight by Josephine Cox were also among the strong sellers.
